I hate surprises. I would rather plan out my day than be taken by surprise and have no clue what is going on. However, there are exceptions to every rule. Last week my best friend from Orlando called me saying she had flown to New York with our friend Bry. I immediately burst into tears due to shock, I can’t handle being surprised like that. Within 20 minutes I went from being asleep in my bed to dashing out the door to catch the next train into the city. I apologize to the people of New York for screaming down 43rd street when I saw Leah and Bry.
I met Leah 5 years ago when we both lived in Orlando and worked at Disney World. We were working the same shift at the Magic Kingdom and after work decided to play around in the park. The afternoon flew by and we ended up staying until it was closing time. During our day in the Happiest Place on Earth we discovered we both shared a love of Harry Potter, Betsey Johnson and Hello Kitty. In the 5 years that we have been friends we have lived on opposite sides of the world, the country and the hallway. The only benefit that comes from living apart from your best friend is the amount of frequent flyer miles you are able to rack up.
The first day that Bry and Leah were in town we went to go see How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Bry’s friend was one of the dancers in the show so we were able to go backstage to see the stage and the set. We happened to run into the star of the show, Nick Jonas, and considering we are quite big Disney fans that was a thrilling moment.
On Friday we decided to enter the lottery for the show, Priscilla Queen of the Desert. We didn’t get our hopes up too high because the odds in the lottery are quite slim. Luck was on our side because Leah’s name got called and we won tickets for front row center. Leah was quite excited because she had never won anything before, and front row tickets to a Broadway show is quite impressive.
I asked Leah a few questions about her week in the Big Apple:
What was your favorite part about being in New York City this week?
Going to see Phantom of the Opera. That has been my favorite Broadway show as long as I can remember. I have the movie and the soundtrack but never got to see the show. It was phenomenal, even better than I could have hoped for.
Is there anything you didn’t like about NYC?
The store by Time Square called Time Scare where they jump out and try to scare you. I did not like that one bit. I hate being scared.
How long have you been planning this trip to New York?
Bry and I decided to come up here about a month ago. I’ve never been for more than a day or two and have not gotten to see all the touristy things before.
Considering you live in Orlando where the weather rarely dips below 70 how are you enjoying the cold?
I don’t like it one bit. I’m freezing here. I can’t wait to get back to my flip flops.
Are you planning another trip to New York soon?
Hopefully! Next time it won’t be a surprise, don’t worry.
Although I hate surprises I can let this one slide. There is never a bad time to have your best friend come and visit you. I guess now it’s my turn to start planning a trip back to Orlando.
