My Valentine, John McClane

This Tuesday marks the 5th Valentine’s Day I have had the pleasure of spending with one of my favorite men. He's dedicated, brave and has a great sense of humor.  Unfortunately he is also fictional. This man is John McClane from the movie, Die Hard.

While most people spend their Valentine’s Day watching tear inducing chick flicks, I enjoy a movie full of suspense, explosions and machine guns. 5 years ago while spending Valentine’s Day at home with my roommate, Die Hard happened to be on TV. With no other set plans we enjoyed a night full of Bruce Willis. While watching this movie I was moved by the dedication of his character John McClane. On a trip to visit his wife who he is currently separated from, the building she works in is taken over by terrorists. John is able to make an escape and devises a plan to get back to his wife and make sure that no harm comes to her. This is a woman who moved to the other side of the country and switched back to her maiden name, and yet he is still set to risk it all to make sure she is safe. This New York cop takes on a dozen armed terrorists single handedy and there is nothing that they can put in his way to defer this man from getting to his wife. Aganist all odds he is succesfully able to save her and ends the movie with a happily ever after style kiss. If that’s not true love then I don’t know what is.

Who decided that Valentine's Day has to consist of fairytales and Nicholas Sparks movies? Although Die Hard is commonly referred to as an action-adventure movie, I see no reason why you can’t throw it in the romance category as well. After all what is Valentine's Day really about? Being so in love with someone that you are willing to give up your own life for them seems like a good answer. Any woman would be lucky to spend Valentine’s Day with a man like John McClane.
